Long before the seemingly endless debates over wider roadways, bumper to bumper traffic, crowded schools, bridges and more there was the belief that Parrish could one day become the favored hometown in Manatee County.
Today, there are still handfuls of locals who have seen it all. They remember Parrish as a sleepy little town; a place where everyone knew their neighbor by name. They share wonderful stories of a true hometown community with neighbor helping neighbor and the “good old days”, before shopping opportunities, grocery stores, and restaurants. Added to the mix are families like mine who have been here since the late 80’s. We’ve raised our families alongside the new growth of subdivisions and new homes. Together, we continue to welcome the newest generation to the fold.
This is our heritage!
Whether it be via Facebook, the newspaper, or just a chat outside of Publix, it is interesting to see the varied positions people hold on the “what was” and the “what is to be” for Parrish and the surrounding areas. The commonality we all share is the pride in our community. No matter where we stand on growth or the growing pains that are sure to follow, our roots are as strong as the ancient oaks that still border many of our roadways. We support and promote local businesses. We welcome new and fresh ideas. We celebrate the successes of our fellow neighbors and our local leaders. We embrace each other in times of illness and tragedy. In totality, we may not know each other’s name, but we know what it means to be a Parrish resident and what it means to call this wonderful place “home.”
March was an exciting time for many as we ventured out to enjoy awesome events throughout the extended community. From the Parrish Chili Cookoff to the DeSoto Seafood Festival, Manatee County has something for everyone, that’s for sure.
If you are a newcomer to our area, WELCOME! You will love it here. Parrish may very well be one of the biggest small-towns you will ever know, and we’re proud of that. Growing pains or not, we continue to grow together and we’re excited to see the new path unfold.
To those that have done the heavy lifting to make this a better place, a true and sincere thank you!
